The Michigan Health Sciences Undergraduate Research Academy provides eligible students with a ten-week intensive research experience at the University of Michigan.


MHSURA Scholars have the opportunity to:

  • Choose between a research or a clinical fellowship experience.

  • Be matched with a faculty mentor based on your career interests.

  • Gain additional insight and understanding of health disparities.

  • Learn about a broad spectrum of career options in health sciences.

  • Exhibit your research or clinical experience at a University of Michigan symposium attended by faculty, staff and students at the end of the program.

 

Duration: 10 weeks (May 31 through August 8, 2015)
Stipend: $4,000 (before taxes)
Housing and meal plan: Provided
Location: University of Michigan Medical School

 

Minimum eligibility requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien

  • Have a valid U.S. social security number

  • Have completed their first year of college before enrolling in the program

  • Attend an accredited college or university

  • A minimum cumulative and a minimum science GPA of 3.0.

  • Be available full-time (40 hours per week plus evening and weekend hours) fromMay 31 to August 8.

University of Michigan SMART summer program 

Application deadline: January 16, 2015

 

The 2015 UM-SMART Session: June 1 – August 7 (10 weeks). 

 

The UM-SMART Program provides an opportunity for highly motivated and talented undergraduates to participate in a 10-week research-focused program.  UM-SMART is designed for undergrads who are potentially interested in obtaining a combined MD/PhD degree leading to a career in academic medicine focused on basic research relevant to human diseases.  This program may help you decide if this is the right career for you, and could enhance your competitiveness when applying to MD/PhD programs.

 

Participants in UM-SMART can expect to:

  • Perform full-time research in a faculty laboratory

  • Attend weekly luncheon presentations where faculty discuss their research

  • Give short presentations of their summer accomplishments at the conclusion of the program

  • Obtain clinical exposure opportunities in the form of physician shadowing

  • Attend the MSTP annual scientific retreat

  • Attend formal MCAT instruction over an eight-week period

  • Receive a stipend of $4400, plus housing. The program also will cover student transportation costs up to $200. Students will need to provide their own meals.

 

Eligibility requirements

  • Come from an educational, cultural or geographic background that is underrepresented in the sciences OR

  • Have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances OR

  • Have a physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities

  • Be a current undergraduate (those applying to Med/Grad School for 2015 are not eligible)

  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident

  • Have completed either an organic chemistry course with lab or a biology course (physiology, biology, biochemistry) with lab

  • Submit at least two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a research mentor or the instructor of a laboratory course

  • Maintain a 3.2 grade point average
